Rat extermination — urgent response

The Norway rat (brown rat) is gaining ground in Montreal and the South Shore. Fast intervention, entry-point diagnosis, monthly program available for businesses (separate fee).

The Norway rat (brown rat or sewer rat) has become a growing problem in Greater Montreal since 2020. Bigger, smarter and more dangerous than the mouse, it digs tunnels under foundations, contaminates food storage areas, and transmits leptospirosis, salmonella and rarely hantavirus. A rat infestation is an emergency — their reproduction and trap-shyness make this a pest only a professional protocol can eliminate.

Signs of infestation

How to tell if you have them

These indicators appear first. Visible presence during the day almost always signals an established infestation.

  • Capsule-shaped droppings up to 2 cm long
  • Burrows near foundation, compost or shed
  • Loud scratching sounds in walls or under floor
  • Greasy trails along interior or exterior walls
  • Deep gnawing on wood, PVC, soft metal

Why act

Risks and consequences

  • 1Transmission of leptospirosis, salmonella and trichinosis
  • 2Severe structural damage from digging and gnawing
  • 3High fire risk from gnawing electrical wires
  • 4Major contamination of commercial storage areas
  • 5Population that can double every 2 months without intervention

Our treatment

Professional method, structured protocol

Rat intervention requires a reinforced protocol. Phase 1: inspection of exterior burrows and activity points, deployment of maximum-security tamper-proof bait stations and industrial mechanical traps. Phase 2: adjustment visits at 7 and 14 days (included in the rat protocol). Phase 3: exclusion diagnosis — locating and marking burrows, openings > 1.5 cm and weak points, with a materials recommendation report (galvanized metal mesh, mortar) that you or your contractor can seal. A monthly maintenance program with reports is available for businesses at a separate fee.

Prevention

Prevent their return

  • Eliminate exterior water sources (containers, blocked gutters)
  • Keep compost in sealed, off-ground bins
  • Cut dense vegetation near the house
  • Seal openings over 1.5 cm
  • Regularly inspect foundations for burrows
